wasn’t sure about sailing, thought it was all just a bunch of fancy terms for simple things. after reading this, gotta say, it’s kinda cool how there’s a whole language for it. might give sailing a try, props jonathan for laying it out like this.

I have to question the necessity of knowing all 75 terms. I mean, are we training to be pirates here, Jonathan? Sure, a handful might be helpful, but let’s be realistic about what people will actually remember.

Half of these terms are for show. Real sailors know the water tells you what to do, not some fancy list. I bet half the folks reading can’t even tie a proper bowline.

This list is spot on, Jonathan Holmes. Been on the sea for decades, and I swear by terms like ‘ahoy’ and ‘starboard’. But hey, where’s ‘ahoy’ on your list? Any seasoned sailor knows that’s the real first word you learn at sea.
